Throwing Junk
A Chubby Jew’s Take on the World Of Sports

I’ve got a great idea…..Finish Strong!!!!

I sure hate the bye week in the NFL. I’m sure the players appreciate a little time to get healthy, but what the hell am I supposed to do on a fall Sunday with the wife and child out? Let’s just say there was a lot of fantasy scoreboard watching going on in my living room. Not a lot of pants wearing.

So here’s what I have to look forward to: 8 Jet games left. I’m not sure how I feel about the remaining schedule. There are some sneaky games left, including next weeks match up with the Jags. From my point of view there is only one way to fix this season (outside of running the table and winning a Super Bowl, which I would sign for right now). Having already lost twice to the Dolphins and another bad home loss to the Bills (which I was at, but thanks to a Jim Beam comma don’t remember much other than waking up and wondering where I was and why it was a game at all) there must be some divisional pride found from deep down inside. Here’s how you wash the Ted Ginn, Jr. taste from your mouth: Beat the Patriots! Again!

Looking ahead? Absolutely. I’m not playing, so it really shouldn’t matter. Obviously it would be nice to start the post bye season with a win. In fact, it has to happen. It’s no cake walk, but if this team is any good, they should beat Jacksonville. That’s the tone setter for the rest of the year. Then carry whatever momentum that creates into New England the following week and beat the Patriots! Again!

A lot of us have forgotten that the Jets did play some good football earlier in the year. And the beat the Patriots. Granted, Brady was still getting his legs back and they were without Wes Welker. But a win is a win. And they won.

Did they talk a little too much? Yes. Did they put too much stock into a week 2 game? It’s the Jets. What else do we have to look forward to? I struggle to not be cynical and a typical Jet fan when it comes to this stuff. Some people have a problem with the Jets cocky attitude. I don’t because when you’re trying to erase a life time of heartbreak, you need to have an attitude about it.

It’s easy to say “same old Jets”. I’m susceptible to it as much as any of us. But I want it to stop right now! No more hiding behind a franchise being cursed. It doesn’t make rooting for them any easier. I don’t take any pleasure in thinking the other shoe is going to drop any second. I’m a Mets fan for Christs’ sake, too. I can only take so much!

But let’s try and look at it with a little perspective for a second. Starting this season with a rookie QB and coach, if someone asked me if I would take 4-4 going into the bye I would have told them to shut the fuck up and stop asking me stupid questions. Having said that, 4-4 is not the end of a season. Especially if both the rookie QB and coach learned from the mistakes they made in the first half of the season and can correct them going forward. Rex, coach the whole team. You are not a defensive coordinator anymore. Act like it! Sanchez, I don’t care if you eat hot dogs on the sideline. I care what you do on the field. Treat the ball with a little respect, hand it off to one of the best rushing games in the league and convert a few big 3rd downs. Worry about being great next year. Just don’t suck anymore this year and I’ll forget about the 5 interceptions against the Bills that I don’t really remember to begin with (see Jim Beam above).

A good way to make me forget about the bad divisional losses is by getting a good divisional road win. Don’t talk about wanting to embarrass them. Don’t talk about kissing anyones rings. Don’t listen to how the team you beat earlier this year isn’t the same anymore. Go in and hit the pretty boy in the mouth. Beat the Patriots! Again!
