Reason # 5 billion why it sucks to be a Met fan
As if the World Series wasn’t enough of a kick in my nuts the Mets are deciding they’ll pick up where they left off for the off season. Is it possible that Omar has suffered an off season ending injury? Has a rash of hamstring injuries made it’s way through the scouting department? Or are the Mets exactly what I don’t want them to be?
I was thinking about it last night and it struck me. Do you know what the Mets are without the few moments of glory in their franchises history? It pains me to say it, but they’re the New York Clippers. Think about it. They share a major city with a powerhouse of a franchise. They offer you minor glimpses of hope. And just when you are about to believe, the owner decides to go cheap on you.
The most frustrating part about this team is that they are closer to being good than most want to realize. There are enough guys coming back from injury that will automatically improve their roster from the end of last year. But it still is not enough, especially when the Phillies and Braves continue to improve. This Mets team is still in dire need of at least one power bat and another starter. When I say starter I mean someone other than Joel Pineiro. When I say power bat I mean someone other than Alex Cora. This is just in case the Wilpons do check this site for advice, which would explain why this organization is in the position they are in.
I’m not saying that they should go out and sign every free agent and make every trade, but the fact that they seem to be asleep when they should be most active is very telling. It tells you that they can’t really make any trades because no one wants the garbage they have in their farm system. It also tells you that they are unwilling to overpay to get free agents to come here because there is really no other way to get a free agent to come to this mess.
So the Mets will bottom pick and hope that someone cheap will pan out. And when it doesn’t, they’ll complain that they were hamstrung by a budget, just like 99% of the rest of baseball. Only their budget is bigger than almost everyone’s, but it’s their brains that seem strained. Zing!
